Where to put stickers in France: what the law says
In short: in France, putting a sticker on a road sign, street furniture or a wall that is not yours, without permission, can be penalised. The safest options are your own belongings, a surface whose owner agrees, or a public free-posting board.
What is risky
- Road and direction signs, street lamps, street furniture: the rules in force allow authorities to penalise posters, small bills and stickers placed on these supports (ministerial answer to a written question in the National Assembly, no. 76014).
- Facades, vehicles, public roads: signs or drawings placed without permission may fall under article 322-1 of the French Penal Code, which covers damage to other people's property (ministerial answer, written question no. 108832).
- Unauthorised posting ("affichage sauvage"): the law of 29 December 1979, now part of the Environment Code (articles L. 581-1 and following), regulates posting outside designated places. Municipalities can also adopt local orders about posting on their street furniture.
Safer options
- Free-posting boards: some municipalities reserve spaces for associations and free expression, with their own rules (size, author identification). Ask your town hall.
- Your own belongings: laptop, notebook, water bottle, bike, helmet, personal vehicle.
- A surface whose owner agrees: association premises, shop window, mailbox, private wall, with permission.
- Handing them out: stands, events, meetings, exchanges between activists.
Good practices
- Ask permission before sticking anything on property that is not yours.
- Prefer surfaces from which a sticker can be removed without damage.
- Do not leave the backing paper on the ground, and remove worn-out stickers.
- Check your municipality's rules: they differ from one town to another.
