Why "Fuck Hamas"?

"FCK HMS" stands for "Fuck Hamas". It is an unambiguous rejection of an Islamist terrorist organisation, antisemitic from its founding charter and responsible for the October 7, 2023 massacre. It is not a rejection of Palestinians, nor of Muslims.

What is Hamas?

Hamas ("Islamic Resistance Movement") was founded in Gaza in 1987. Its 1988 charter describes it as "one of the wings of the Muslim Brotherhood in Palestine" (article 2) and, in article 7, quotes a hadith calling for the killing of Jews. This is not an interpretation: it is written in black and white in its founding text.

In 2017, Hamas published a new document that changes the vocabulary (the conflict would be with "the Zionist project" rather than with Jews), but keeps the refusal to recognise Israel and the armed struggle. October 7 showed what that change of tone was worth.

Hamas seized power in Gaza by force in 2007, driving out Fatah. It is designated a terrorist organisation by the European Union (its armed wing since 2001, the whole movement since 2003), by the United States since 1997 and by the United Kingdom (the whole movement since 2021). France applies the EU list.

October 7, 2023

That day, thousands of armed men from Hamas and other groups crossed the border between Gaza and Israel. Around 1,200 people were killed, the vast majority civilians: families in the kibbutzim of Be'eri, Kfar Aza and Nir Oz, more than 360 young people at the Nova music festival. 251 people were abducted and taken to Gaza, from babies to the elderly. It was the deadliest day for Jews since the Holocaust.

In March 2024, the UN Special Representative on Sexual Violence in Conflict, Pramila Patten, concluded there were "reasonable grounds" to believe that rape, including gang rape, had been committed during the attack, and "clear and convincing information" that hostages had suffered sexual violence in captivity.

The last living hostages were released in October 2025. The body of the last hostage held in Gaza, Ran Gvili, was returned to Israel in January 2026, more than two years after his abduction.

Gaza's civilians, Hamas's human shields

On October 7, Hamas murdered Jewish civilians in their homes, in Israel. In Gaza, it uses its own population as a human shield: tunnels, rockets and fighters placed under and among homes, schools and hospitals. This strategy has long been documented, notably by the NATO Strategic Communications Centre of Excellence.

Our position is clear: responsibility for the civilian deaths in this war lies with Hamas, which started it and deliberately exposes its own people. Hamas also represses Gazans who dare to challenge it: in 2019, Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International documented arrests and violence against protesters of the "We want to live" movement. Saying "Fuck Hamas" means refusing to let this movement speak on behalf of Palestinians.

Criticising Hamas is not targeting Muslims

Our line is simple: secularism, against Islamism, against antisemitism, against racism. Islamism is a political ideology; Islam is a religion practised by millions of people who have nothing to do with Hamas. Many Muslims, including Palestinians and Arab Israelis, condemn Hamas, sometimes at the cost of their safety.

Is an "FCK HMS" sticker legal?

Criticising an organisation designated as terrorist, even harshly, is not incitement to hatred. What French law prohibits is targeting people because of their origin, nationality or religion. This is not legal advice: if in doubt, consult a professional.

Is it an anti-Palestinian message?

No. Hamas is not the Palestinian people. It is an armed organisation that took Gaza by force and made October 7 its political project.

What does "FCK HZB" mean?

"Fuck Hezbollah". Hezbollah is a Lebanese Shiite Islamist militia, armed and funded by Iran, whose armed wing has been designated terrorist by the European Union since 2013.
